  Matt was fantastic to work with as we completely transformed our backyard and now our front yard! We found him through Yelp and were really impressed with his quick thinking – he came up with a brilliant initial design for our narrow, long backyard, incorporating a pergola, fire pit, artificial turf, and beautiful landscaping. It all flowed together so well, and he really nailed the placement of the pergola to seamlessly connect with our family room. We made a few tweaks, and he even turned around an updated design that same evening! He was incredibly responsive, which really sped things up. He gave us some great advice on materials and budgeting, helping us prioritize our spending. We absolutely loved working with him and have now brought him on to design our front yard too.   Matt and Water & Earth Landscape Design were fantastic to work with. We found them through Yelp and really connected with their modern, Eichler-friendly design philosophy – it just felt like a perfect fit for our newly remodeled home in Palo Alto. From the start, Matt was incredibly responsive, always getting back to us quickly whether it was via email or phone. We especially appreciated his ability to offer a lot of design options while still gently guiding us when we got stuck. Ultimately, we felt completely confident in his judgment and trusted his expertise to make decisions for us.   Honestly, our backyard project was a really frustrating experience until we connected with Matt. I’d seen his work online and was so impressed, but he was incredibly busy at the time, and we ended up moving forward on our own. We ended up working with a fantastic landscaping company, but the pool company we initially hired was a complete disaster – broken promises, no work done after they dug a massive hole, and just a lot of wasted time and stress. It’s been incredibly difficult because we can't start the rest of our project until the pool is finished. However, Matt reached out to us even though we weren’t clients. He listened to our problem and, thankfully, recommended a completely different pool company that’s actually been fantastic – incredibly professional and sticking to their timelines. Because of Matt’s quick thinking and recommendation, our project is finally back on track and we’re hoping to have it done in time for the holidays. He’s a genuinely great guy who really cares about helping people, and I’d absolutely recommend him without hesitation. If you’re considering a similar project, take my advice: be patient and wait – it’s definitely worth it! report abuse

  “We really appreciated Matt’s help and expertise during the design phase – he was fantastic. However, unfortunately, the landscaping work itself was a significant letdown. Over 85% of the measurements were inaccurate, which forced us to make last-minute, costly changes – we ended up paying an extra $6,000-$7,000. It was incredibly frustrating because we’d clearly communicated our fixed budget from the start, and we believe things could have stayed on track if the contractor had been more proactive in considering our limitations. Ultimately, it was a very disappointing experience for us, especially given the initial positive experience with Matt.” report abuse

  “Matt from Water and Earth was absolutely fantastic! We had a really tricky vision for our Eichler front yard and were struggling to get it down on paper. Honestly, we knew next to nothing about working with our yard’s slope, so we reached out to Matt, and he completely nailed it. He’s just a genuinely great guy – so easy to talk to, super efficient, and incredibly professional. He did a brilliant job translating our ideas and cleverly addressing all the things we hadn’t considered. Plus, he even added some fantastic ideas of his own, really elevating the design! To help us visualize everything, he showed us the plans in a 3D model, which was incredibly helpful. You know how Eichler homes are – those gorgeous Mid-Century Modern post and beam houses with all the windows? Standard landscaping just doesn’t cut it. Matt really understood that and brought a clean, creative, and natural feel to the design. We’re starting the work now and I’ll be sure to share pictures once it’s finished. As someone who runs a construction company in San Jose, I’ve collaborated with him several times and I’ve always been impressed by his incredibly clear and detailed designs.
