This home presented a significant number of serious issues upon inspection. The foundation work, particularly around the oil tank and other utilities, was completely inadequate – the slab was poured directly around cinder block supports, and there was no proper separation between the foundation and the equipment. Furthermore, the construction lacked essential safeguards like a vapor barrier and proper support for the toilet area. The deck was also built without adhering to building codes, relying solely on lag bolts and lacking supports along the house. Finally, several design choices, such as the kitchen door’s proximity to the power vent, highlighted a clear lack of attention to detail and code compliance. Given the challenging site conditions – a wet forest – and the numerous deficiencies, it’s clear the building inspector’s approval for occupancy was premature and ultimately misguided.
