  Okay, here’s a natural-sounding evaluation based on that experience: “I hired John to fix a leaking furnace last week, and unfortunately, things quickly went wrong. He replaced several parts, but the leak returned the next day. John insisted it was just a coincidence and that the furnace was fine, but then the whole thing stopped working completely. It turned out the problem was a faulty igniter he’d installed over a year ago, and the part he charged me $200 for was actually only $40.
