I was incredibly concerned by what I witnessed on July 9th. I saw a Trihydro flatbed trailer, being pulled by a vehicle, cross 3rd Street and enter the Curtis Viaduct with a cardboard parade float held down by two elementary school children – without any safety restraints. It was completely unacceptable that children were essentially sitting on the trailer to hold the float in place. As an engineering firm, Trihydro should absolutely know better than to put children in such a dangerous situation. Using children to secure a cargo, especially something as light as a cardboard float, is incredibly irresponsible and demonstrates a serious lack of safety awareness. There are perfectly reasonable and professional ways to secure a trailer, like using tow straps, and it’s baffling that this wasn’t done. Honestly, I’m deeply disappointed. As a mother, I was terrified for those children, and as someone who relies on engineering expertise, I question how they can possibly ensure safety in their work if they can’t even manage a basic level of cargo security.
