FMI’s Arizona operations – they own and run five copper and two molybdenum mines – are a really important part of the state’s economy, which is why their headquarters is based in Phoenix. I have a lot of respect for the roughly 13,000 American workers they employ. Now, let’s be honest, their mines aren’t exactly pristine, and they don’t always prioritize the most stringent environmental protections or employee safety. Despite that, the company generates billions in profits each year. It’s just frustrating that when they cause significant environmental damage, the fines they receive – usually between $1 and $10 million – feel disproportionately small. There have also been some past issues with sales practices and conflicts of interest that have cost them a substantial amount, upwards of $135 million. It’s a mixed bag, but with operations in Bagdad and their international mines, I think they’ll likely continue to operate.

Don’t be swayed by the hourly wage; it’s not worth the financial strain and uncertainty. I ended up accumulating significant medical debt during this process, and I strongly advise anyone considering this opportunity to save up a substantial amount of money beforehand. Honestly, a job at a fast-food restaurant would likely be a less stressful and more reliable experience.
