Manny, or “The Wrecker” as we all called him, was truly one of a kind. Working alongside him at Pool and Christmas Village was… well, it was known for its nicknames, and everyone got one they didn’t really like. But Manny was different. Despite being a short guy – I’d be surprised if he ever hit 5’4” – he had a heart bigger than any 20 men I know. He was always so generous, compassionate, and determined to help anyone in need, never asking for anything in return. He was an incredible worker too; he could operate those Bobcats and Mustangs like a pro, and his pool construction was always perfectly level. I spent nearly eight years building pools with him, and even after I left the industry, he’d always call me up and say, “Hey boy, be at my house at 7 am tomorrow – we’ve got pools to build.” I watched him grow his business, passing on his skills to his son. It’s heartbreaking to hear he passed away about five years ago, but I’m so glad his son is carrying on the legacy. Honestly, I almost reached out to him just yesterday when I was looking for work, and I just want to say, if you ever need someone, I’ll be at the corner at 7 am – don’t forget my Dunkin’ coffee in that cardboard cup!
